The Jester
Rank: Team Dog
Male, 7
Litter: Shacklton
A Jester brings joy to the world through humor, fun, irreverence and often likes to make some mischief. If that doesn’t describe Bo’Sun, (A.K.A Boats) to a T, I don’t know what does! This boy is packed full of energy and drive just like the rest of the Shackleton litter, and his screams of excitement are heard loud and clear by anyone in the vicinity before the team takes off!
Boats and I did not click immediately when he joined the team several seasons ago. Everything about him on paper is the kind of dog I want.
High drive, energetic, happy, intelligent, loving, and not to mention fast.
But something was just off. He wouldn’t listen to me unless he was in harness, not really, and if he wasn’t in harness, I could sit there and call him in the yard and he’d still go barreling past me with only a glance.
I learned very early on in my dive into dog mushing that some dogs are not there to be perfect in the way you want them to be. Some dogs are there for the lessons that you need. And their respect must be earned. So, I waited.
And I watched him race. I watched an already mature, incredibly gifted dog fresh off a professional race team, do what he does best, and I was floored.
I wonder sometimes when the shock of watching these incredible athletes do what they were built for and love to do will go away. I hope it never does.
After several hundred miles of racing, we have more of an understanding and respect for one an other. His drive and his passion burn bright and he’s a very key part of my team, and I’m beyond proud to have this firecracker on the team this season!
When he’s not busy running everywhere he goes, Boats likes to spend his time flinging stuffed animals around the house until they die. Squeaking them so no one can sleep is his favorite pastime!
